The 2017 January transfer window closes at 11pm (GMT) and there are likely to be plenty of twists and turns at Bolton in the closing hours.

Wanderers completed their first signing of the month on Monday, with Burnley forward Chris Long joining the club on loan for the remainder of the season.

When news broke on Sunday that a player already out on loan in the EFL was due to be recalled by his parent club, then link up with the Trotters, many supporters jumped to the conclusion that Adam Le Fondre, currently at Wigan Athletic, would head back to Cardiff City before returning to the North West - switching the DW Stadium for Macron Stadium.

The reality was different, however, with Burnley forward Long being recalled from a stint at Fleetwood Town before making the short journey across Lancashire.

Le Fondre could yet end up at Bolton by close of business on Tuesday, but the 30-year-old former loanee isn't thought to be top of the priority list, with Preston North End's Eoin Doyle also said to be attracting the attention of Wanderers boss Phil Parkinson.

Any transfer activity will depend on outgoings, with the Trotters understood to be at their maximum number of 23 registered first-team players. Jamie Proctor could be one casualty, with Bradford City, Port Vale and Portsmouth all keen on his signature, while Oldham Athletic continue to haggle wages over a loan move for Chris Taylor.

Bolton are also contemplating paying up a number of player contracts as a last-ditch attempt to free up space, with out-of-favour defenders Lewis Buxton, Dean Moxey and Dorian Dervite potential candidates for the chopping block.

Nick Kuipers, of Dutch side MVV Maastricht, could be a replacement due to his versatility across the backline, although perhaps the most anticipated deal of deadline day could be the arrival of Sammy Ameobi.

Ameobi returned to Newcastle United at the start of the month after a successful opening half of the campaign on loan at the Macron, but a fresh loan stint looks set to depend on whether the Magpies are successful in their pursuit of Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.
