Phil Parkinson hopes a deal can be agreed for Sammy Ameobi to return to Bolton, but insists he must plan for life without the winger.

Ameobi was a huge hit during his time at Macron Stadium, scoring four goals in 24 appearances during a spell on loan from Newcastle United, before returning to St James' Park following the expiry of his deal on Monday.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace, Parkinson says Ameobi could yet return before the closure of the transfer window but he is actively looking to bolster his weakened squad - even if it meant losing out on the 24-year-old later in the month.

"Sammy has gone back," Parkinson said.

"It's a shame and I don't think it's completely dead but they have called quite a few of their loan players back to thicken out their squad through this period.

"We'd like to thank Sammy for his contribution and we'll see what happens on that one going forward.

"We're also looking for players to replace him because we need to make sure the squad remains strong.

"We've only got 16 players training and that includes a couple of youngsters, so we are a bit threadbare when you take the injured players out.

"It's possible that Keshi Anderson's loan may end as well. He's been ill so hasn't trained."
