Phil Parkinson praised Bolton's calmness under pressure, after seeing his side secure a 1-0 victory at Northampton Town.

Zach Clough scored the only goal as Wanderers moved above Sheffield United and into the League One automatic promotion places, but he was quick to hail the defensive attitude of his players after a second-half where his team were under the cosh at Sixfields Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson expressed his delight at the result and believes the Trotters deserved all three points for their efforts.

"It's a great win for us," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester. "I thought it was a dangerous game for us, coming here after they'd lost three games.

"They started the season well and were up and around the play-offs, so I knew it was a dangerous game.

"I thought we controlled the first-half for long periods and scored a fantastic goal.

"Then they went direct in the second-half with two big men up top. We didn't have our biggest back-four in place and were always going to come under pressure, so it took a lot of good decision making and people being in the right positions.

"It was difficult to get control of the game in the second period because of the way they played and you can't blame them because they were chasing the game and got the ball up to Marc Richards and Alex Revell at every opportunity.

"In the main we've dealt with it really well. Derik Osede is a footballing centre-back and is a terrific player, but I thought he did really well today.

"We said to the lads that we needed to reset our mentality and motivation on our travels. After the Peterborough game we spoke about the wins we've had away. You've got to deserve every point you get in this division and the lads have done that.

"I couldn't be happier with the way the lads have played today. It was a really tough game on a tight pitch. It was one of those games where if you're not really up for the battle, you can get turned over."
