Phil Parkinson has lavished praise on Alex Perry, claiming the development squad midfielder is capable of making the grade at Bolton.

Perry played 85 minutes on Saturday, as Wanderers advanced into the second round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over Grimsby Town at Macron Stadium.

The 18-year-old, who was making only his second senior appearance for the Trotters, certainly caught the eye of the club's manager, with Parkinson admitting post-match that Perry has the attributes to become a success.

"It was good to see Alex Perry get a game," Parkinson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"I thought he was excellent. It was a really tough game.

"When you're playing under-23 football, the pace is nothing like it was today and I thought he acquitted himself very well.

"He showed that he could be a very good player."
