Phil Parkinson expressed his delight at Bolton's win over Blackpool, irrespective of it coming in a Checkatrade Trophy fixture.

Sammy Ameobi scored the only goal, Wanderers' first in five matches, as they secured a first win in nine outings to keep alive their hopes of progressing into the knockout stages of the competition.

Speaking after the game, Parkinson revealed he had sat down with a number of players following Saturday's dismal showing against Oxford United and was satisfied with their response, with victory over the Seasiders.

"I'm pleased to get back to winning ways," Parkinson told Tower FM. "It doesn't matter which competition it was.

"After the run we've been on, it was important just to win and get a goal.

"I was pleased with the way the lads went about their jobs. We've had a really tough time, but we've got to slowly build back the confidence with everybody.

"After the weekend, it was really about the players who got selected staking a claim for the shirt.

"I thought we moved the ball well in the first half-hour in particular. The second-half took us a while to get going again, but once we started playing more positive - more forward passes - we looked like we could score again.

"All in all, we're pleased just to win.

"It's been a very frustrating period for us. I was hugely disappointed with Saturday as it was probably as low as I could get as a manager.

"If you get beat and your team plays well, you can live with it, but I wasn't happy at all at the weekend.

"We've had a very busy last couple of days sitting down and showing players parts of the game which, related to them, we needed to do better, but we had a good response tonight and hopefully we can take that into the weekend."
