Max Clayton is set for another spell on the sidelines, after it emerged he is to undergo exploratory surgery due to ongoing knee issues.

Clayton, who recently entered the final 12 months of his contract at Macron Stadium, hasn't represented Wanderers since tearing his hamstring in a 1-1 draw against Brentford last November.

After working his way back to fitness, knee inflammation prevented the 22-year-old from featuring heavily throughout pre-season and a role as unused substitute is the closest Clayton has come to first-team football so far this campaign.

Clayton is due to go under the knife next week, with the timescale of his lay-off unknown until the extent of the problem is diagnosed.
