Bolton chairman Ken Anderson says the club are closing in on a successor to Neil Lennon, but denied speculation linking former player Kevin Nolan with the role.

With relegation to League One confirmed following Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Derby County, Wanderers have already started preparations for life in the third tier and top of their list is naming a manager capable of targeting an immediate return to the Championship.

Anderson admits to being pleasantly surprised at the quality of candidates who have put themselves forward for the vacant position and hopes to make a decision in the coming days, having whittled down more than 50 applications to a final shortlist of three.

"The managerial vacancy was really surprising and encouraging," Anderson said. "We had over 50 applications and had a number of people apply who I wouldn't have expected.

"They are high quality, good people, and one of the managers actually said they'd walk to Bolton for the job.

"We took that down at the start of the week to the final six and are probably down to the final three people now. Second interviews will be held later this week.

"Kevin Nolan, as far as I'm aware, hasn't applied.

"I wasn't surprised by the number of people who applied.

"What I was surprised at was the quality of the applicants. Not that I don't think Bolton deserve that sort of quality, but I thought people may think Bolton were sinking and would they want to come to that.

"The various problems on the field have been reported but when you see who we announce, whoever we announce, hopefully most people will be very happy with it."
