Niall Maher deserved to make his debut in Bolton's defeat to Reading, according to the club's interim manager Jimmy Phillips.

After appearing in a number of matchday squads throughout the season, Maher made his first senior start for Wanderers on Saturday as Phillips continues to look towards the future and life in League One next season.

Speaking after the game, Phillips admitted Maher has all the qualities to be a success at Macron Stadium and was pleased with the early signs in hope that he can follow in the footsteps of fellow academy graduates who have established themselves at first-team level.

"Niall Maher is someone who has been on loan at Blackpool, as a Championship club, before," Phillips told BBC Radio Manchester.

"He's a young player who has been with us a long time through the academy system and I thought he was deserving of a chance.

"Niall has got pace to deal with wingers and after a bit of a sluggish start, I thought he competed well and it was a very encouraging start to his career at Bolton."
