Jay Spearing's season and potential future at Bolton is in doubt, due to a contractual clause that would spark a £100,000 payment to Liverpool.

Spearing has endured a mixed campaign at Macron Stadium, having been in and out of the side, but has recently returned to action and produced some displays that show signs of him returning to his best.

He was a notable absentee from the team that lost at home to Preston North End on Saturday and, speaking after the game, manager Neil Lennon confirmed the player is in a difficult situation due to the unresolved issue in his contract.

"There's a discrepancy that if Jay plays 50% of games this season, we have to pay Liverpool a considerable amount of money for us and we're not in a position at the minute to be able to do that," Lennon said.

"We tried to get it deferred for a little bit longer but couldn't do that, so unfortunately Jay is in a bit of limbo at the minute and we've had to leave him out.

"Hopefully that can get resolved."
