Neil Lennon was critical of the match officials, after two key decisions went against Bolton in their 2-1 defeat to Preston North End.

With the game level at 1-1, Mark Davies appeared to be pulled back when put clean through on goal, before television replays showed North End's winning goal to have been offside again Eoin Doyle.

Speaking after the game, Lennon admitted he needs more desire from his players in their fight against relegation, but believes the task is made all the more difficult with the standard of officiating on display.

"I think the referee has to have a look at himself," Lennon told BBC Radio Manchester. "The second goal was offside, as Doyle has touched it in from an offside position.

"Mark Davies was (earlier) breaking through on goal and gets bumped. There's no free-kick or penalty and no red card.

"We've missed good chances and that was the crux of the game. We were the better team in the first half and Preston were the better team in the second half.

"Their first goal is disappointing because we had possession and lost it, then didn't work hard enough to defend the attack the way we should have done.

"The players have got to show that it means more to them. I didn't see enough of that in the second half, certainly from a defensive point of view. We are missing two experienced centre-halves and our first choice goalkeeper, but we've been playing well so I'm not using it as an excuse.

"At 1-1 we looked like the team that was going to win it and then we concede a really poor goal, but it is clearly offside and I think the referee had a really poor game from our point of view."
