Ronnie Moore has revealed he tried to sign Zach Clough on loan last season, whilst in charge at former club Hartlepool United.
Clough made his Bolton debut in January 2015, scoring the only goal as Wanderers progressed from an FA Cup third round tie against Wigan Athletic at Macron Stadium.
Moore, who was sacked by Hartlepool on February 10, states he attempted to sign the 20-year-old prior to his arrival on the big stage, claiming he has 'everything you want' from a player branded by the highlights show as the 'Macron Messi'.
"I tried to sign him on loan last season," Moore told Football League Tonight. "Maybe if I'd signed him I'd still be in a job!
"He's got pace, he's clever, he isn't afraid to shoot and he's got an eye for a goal. He's got everything you want from a 'young Messi'.
"At that time Bolton weren't willing to let him out. He wasn't actually playing games, but it was unfortunate for us that they wanted to keep him."
