The Bolton Wanderers takeover saga could be approaching an end, after preferred bidder status was granted to Sports Shield Investments.

Sports Shield, spearheaded by former Wanderers forward Dean Holdsworth, have been publicly chasing a deal since November, when the club's one-time record signing resigned from his role as manager at non-league Brentwood Town and began attending matches at Macron Stadium.

By gaining preferred bidder status, Sports Shield have now entered a period of short-term exclusivity that provides them with due diligence - meaning they have full access to club accounts for an unspecified time.

Reports in recent days have linked billionaire Roger Tamraz to a takeover, after meeting personally with the club's current owner, Eddie Davies, but a deal has failed to materialise ahead of Friday's deadline, brought on by a High Court hearing over unpaid VAT and PAYE tax bills on Monday.

The Bolton Wanderers Supporters' Trust, as well as Isle of Man-based businessman Dennis Rodgers have also held discussions with a view of purchasing the club, but Holdsworth's consortium appear to have beaten their competition and could potentially complete a deal within the next 24 hours.
