Oxford United manager Michael Appleton has confirmed reports of a January approach for Kaiyne Woolery, but admits his hopes of signing the Bolton forward are over.

After troubled spells in charge at both Blackpool and then Blackburn Rovers, Appleton has started to rebuild his reputation and has guided Oxford into the automatic promotion places in League Two.

Weekend reports suggested a £300,000 offer had been tabled for Woolery, whose Wanderers contract comes to an end in the summer, and although Appleton rejected the nature of the approach, he did confirm the 21-year-old was a player on his radar.

"He's someone I've been aware of since he was at Tamworth," Appleton told the Oxford Mail.

"It's probably a bit mischievous because there was an enquiry before the window shut.

"But with the predicament Bolton find themselves in, it wouldn't surprise me if it had come from someone up north rather than down here.

"He's in the team now and scored the winner the other day, so I can't see it happening. It was only a loan situation anyway."

After joining Bolton in August 2014, Woolery made his senior debut as a late substitute for Adam Le Fondre in a 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth the following April. He has since gone on to make 11 appearances for the Trotters, scoring once.
