Sam Allardyce has expressed fond memories of his time working alongside Phil Gartside, who lost his life to cancer.

Gartside, whose first act as Bolton chairman in 1999 was to appoint Allardyce as manager, lost a short battle against the devastating disease on Wednesday, prompting floods of tributes from people associated to the club in a playing, management and supporting capacity.

Allardyce resigned as boss at the Reebok Stadium in May 2007 following long-running disputes with Gartside, but, when asked for his words on the now ex-chairman, the Sunderland manager chose to remember the good times the pair had during a successful period at Wanderers.

"It was obviously devastating news for them and me," Allardyce told Sky Sports News HQ. "I was aware of the illness but kept that close to myself and obviously my condolences go out to the family.

"My memories are great, even though later on we may not have seen eye-to-eye.

"The journey we took from 1999 to 2007 was magical and we took that journey together.

"We basically rebuilt a football club that achieved great success and those are the memories I have of Phil."
