Kevin Nolan has become the latest former Bolton player to step into management, after taking up the vacant role at Leyton Orient.

Nolan has been available as a free agent since leaving West Ham United at the end of last season and had been training with Orient in recent months, despite never agreeing a contract with the club.

The 33-year-old will now get the opportunity to resume his career, having signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the Matchroom Stadium, where he will combine management with a playing role.

A statement, posted on Orient's official club website, read: "The Club are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Nolan as the new player-manager on a two-and-a-half year deal.

"Kevin brings with him invaluable expertise and know how, with 17 years' experience in high level football. A number of strong candidates were interviewed by the Chairman, but Kevin's hunger, desire and passion to succeed at Leyton Orient, coupled with his experience, were key in the decision process and the Club believe they have the man to take Leyton Orient forward and improve the Club's position."

Nolan began his senior career at Bolton, making his debut as a late substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic in March 2000. He went on to make 345 appearances for the club, scoring 50 goals, before completing a £4million transfer to Newcastle United in January 2009.

Two-and-a-half years at St. James' Park added a further 91 games to Nolan's appearance tally, as well as an additional 30 goals, before a £3million switch to West Ham United saw him score 31 times in 157 games prior to his release last summer.

Nolan is just one goal shy of a century in league competition and he could get the opportunity to complete the milestone on Saturday, when Leyton Orient travel to Wycombe Wanderers.
