Wigan Athletic are the latest club to register their interest in the purchase of Bolton Wanderers' training facilities, in Euxton.

In December, news broke that Preston North End chairman Peter Ridsdale had visited the training centre before holding preliminary talks over a potential deal that would see them lease the land from the Trotters.

However, with a permanent sale better suited to Wanderers' finances and hopes of staving off the threat of administration, Wigan have emerged as surprise contenders to land the former site of ROF Chorley, after complications hit plans to build their own training base in Charnock Richard.

Latics, who currently train at Christopher Park, in Standish, completed the purchase of Charnock Richard Golf Club in 2013 and received planning permission to begin development on a new training complex in September 2014.

But issues with Chorley Borough Council, combined with the club's relegation to League One, have meant initial plans have stalled and an alternative may now be on the cards, after officials made their interest known to Bolton counterparts.

Wanderers chiefs, namely board advisor Trevor Birch, are actively seeking fresh income that will enable the club to emerge from a HM Revenue & Customs court hearing on January 18, and a sale of their training ground would provide the opportunity to migrate the first-team with youth players at the Eddie Davies academy in Lostock.
