Middlesbrough are interested in a cut-price transfer for Bolton midfielder Mark Davies, according to reports over the weekend.

An article in Sunday's edition of The Sun newspaper suggests Boro, who will top the Championship at Christmas, are set to take advantage of Wanderers' financial crisis by making a £500,000 offer for their longest serving player.

Davies joined Wanderers in a £1million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2009 and was once hailed as one of the hottest young prospects in English football, but injuries have restricted the 27-year-old to just 182 appearances during his seven years at the club - during which time he has scored 16 goals.

Once courted by Swansea City, Davies was the subject of a £4million offer in August 2012, while the Swans, along with Burnley, Leicester City and Queens Park Rangers were said to be interested in a £3million deal as recently as September 2014.

Davies remains contracted to Bolton until the summer of 2017, but, unless a takeover is completed in the coming months and Wanderers manage to retain their place in the Championship, the former England youth international's days at Macron Stadium are beginning to look numbered.
