Max Clayton could be doubtful for the remainder of the season, after he was sent to see a specialist for an analysis on a hamstring injury.

Clayton fell awkwardly during Bolton's 1-1 draw against Brentford on Monday and was forced off the field shortly before the break at Macron Stadium.

Initial reports suggested the 21-year-old was to face several weeks on the sidelines, but Wanderers boss Neil Lennon revealed surgery may be required and, if that proved to be the case, Clayton would be unlikely to figure again before the end of the campaign.

Speaking ahead of the weekend clash with Cardiff City, Lennon said: "Max Clayton is out. He may require surgery on the hamstring.

"He's seeing a specialist today. If he does need surgery then he's basically out for the season."

News of Clayton's blow is the latest in a career blighted by long-term injuries. In November 2013, during his time at Crewe Alexandra, Clayton broke an ankle and would never return to first-team duty, leaving the club the following summer and completing a move to Bolton.

In December 2014, he ruptured knee ligaments in a goalless draw against Ipswich Town and had to wait until September before forcing his way back into Lennon's squad.

Since joining the club in September 2014, Clayton has been restricted to just 17 appearances in a Wanderers shirt and has scored once.
