Bolton are interested in signing free agent Carlton Cole, but face competition from Sunderland and Scottish champions, Celtic.

Cole can move outside of the transfer window after being released from his contract at West Ham United during the summer and is currently recovering from a calf injury suffered during a trial at Celtic.

Reports over the weekend suggested former Hammers boss Sam Allardyce, who was last week unveiled as the successor to Dick Advocaat at Sunderland, would like to be reunited with the 32-year-old at the Stadium of Light, but Wanderers manager Neil Lennon has publicly expressed his desire to take a look at the one-time Chelsea forward.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Lennon said: "He's a free agent and he's a striker, so it's definitely a possibility.

"We're still looking to add one or two and it's no secret that I want a centre forward."

Cole, who has been capped seven times by England, has made 383 career appearances at club level, scoring 85 goals.
