Neil Lennon has confirmed Bolton had a transfer deadline day bid for Celtic forward Anthony Stokes rejected by the Scottish champions.

Wanderers have struggled for goals so far this season, netting just once in six games during August, and have relied heavily on the struggling partnership of Zach Clough and Gary Madine.

Emile Heskey and Stephen Dobbie were on target as the Trotters beat Motherwell in a testimonial match for Keith Lasley on Saturday and, having stayed in Scotland to represent Celtic in a charity fixture the following day, Lennon admitted his attempts to boost his forward options failed to come to fruition.

"We made an enquiry for Anthony but the club weren't prepared to let him out," Lennon told The Scottish Sun.

"We want to bring in one more striker and Anthony was one we looked at, but we couldn't get it done.

"We haven't spent a bean yet - I say yet, because we're hoping to get some investment into the club.

"But the challenge is one I'm enjoying. It's part of my education as a manager."

Stokes signed for Celtic in August 2010, when Lennon was in charge at Celtic Park, and he has since gone on to score 76 goals in 190 appearances for the club, with many wagering he'll go on to score many more.
