Bolton have completed the free signing of Paul Rachubka, who will serve as backup to Ben Amos at Macron Stadium.

Rachubka was a free agent after leaving Crewe Alexandra over the summer and has signed a deal that will tie him to Wanderers until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old started his career at Manchester United and made three senior appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, before completing a £200,000 transfer to Charlton Athletic in 2002.

He has since gone on to become somewhat of a journeyman, amassing seven clubs and a further 13 loan spells on top.

The most settled period of his career came between 2007 and 2011, when he played a key part helping Blackpool win promotion to the Premier League, although a serious knee injury and the impressive form of Matt Gilks, who stepped in during his absence, saw Rachubka released at the end of a four-year stay at Bloomfield Road.

He has since spent time at Leeds United, Tranmere Rovers, Leyton Orient, Accrington Stanley and Oldham Athletic, before spending the final three months of last season at Crewe.

Rachubka had looked set to stay on in a player-coach capacity at the Alexandra Stadium, but the appointment of former Bolton goalkeeping coach Fred Barber ended any hopes of a new contract - leading to his departure in June.

Despite having Ross Fitzsimons, Harry Campbell and William Jaaskelainen available as backup to Amos, Trotters boss Neil Lennon has been actively searching for a senior alternative and now appears to have filled the void left by the departures of both Adam Bogdan and Andy Lonergan.
