Bolton's development squad began the new season with a victory, as they beat Bristol City U21s 2-1 at the County Ground.

After voluntarily giving up their category one academy status earlier in the year, Wanderers took part in their first U21 Professional Development League 2 match and boosted optimism for the campaign ahead with a well-earned win.

George Newell fired Iain Brunskill's side into a sixth-minute lead, but City were level within two minutes as Ashley Harper fired past Harry Campbell from range.

Wanderers dominated the rest of the opening 45 minutes but couldn't find a way through a resilient Bristol City backline. They did regain their lead 11 minutes after the restart, though, as Jamie Thomas turned well before firing into the bottom corner.

Bolton were comfortable for the remainder of the evening and saw out time to claim three points on their return to the second tier of the development ladder.

They return to action next Monday, when they make the long trip down to Crystal Palace.
