Bolton Boss Outlines Expectations for New Season

Ahead of Saturday's Championship opener against Derby County, Bolton boss Neil Lennon has outlined his targets for the forthcoming campaign.

After succeeding Dougie Freedman as manager in October of last year, Lennon helped guide Wanderers to safety with an 18th-placed finish in the second-tier.

When asked that his targets were ahead of his first full season in charge, Lennon admitted improvement is his main objective, as well as lifting a negative mentality that seems to hover over the club.

"I want us to start well," Lennon said. "(Last year) we had five points from 11 games and you're always chasing your tail after that, so I'd like to think we can start the season better.

"I'm going to need experienced players for that and hopefully we can avoid the amount of injuries we had last year because that really curtailed us in the second-half of the season.

"There's been too much doom and gloom around the place and it's up to myself and the players to try and lift everybody by putting in a good performance on Saturday. If we can do that, it starts a little bit of momentum again.

"There's always talk about the size of the debt, but compared to a lot of other clubs in the Championship we're still in a pretty healthy position.

"We need to perform better on the field. 18th (last season's) was probably decent finish but if you look at the overall picture, with the personnel and playing staff that we have, we can certainly improve on that.

"I think it's up to us to bring that optimism to the club and the supporters."
