Chris Kirkland will spend the week training at Wigan Athletic, before heading over to Bolton for a trial upon their return from Austria.

Kirkland is currently a free agent after departing Sheffield Wednesday last week and has been invited in to train with Wanderers, who are searching for a backup option to recent recruit Ben Amos.

The 34-year-old, who played for Wigan between 2006 and 2012, will train with the Latics' development squad over the coming days but isn't believed to be on their radar in terms of a potential signing, leaving the Trotters in a favourable position as they look to fill the void left by the departures of Adam Bogdan and Andy Lonergan.

After progressing through the academy ranks at Coventry City, Kirkland completed a £6million move to Liverpool in August 2001 and spent five years at Anfield. A successful loan spell with Wigan resulted in the move being made permanent, but he fell out of favour in later years and moved to Sheffield Wednesday after loans at both Leicester City and Doncaster Rovers.

The once-capped England international was unable to get paperwork completed in time for him to join Bolton's first-team squad on a tour of Austria, but he could be available for game time when Neil Lennon takes his side to Morecambe on July 17.
