Wigan Athletic will rival Blackburn Rovers for the free signing of Craig Davies, following his release from Bolton on Tuesday.

Davies is a free agent after Wanderers opted against offering him fresh terms at Macron Stadium, ending an injury-plagued spell which saw him contribute 11 goals in 58 appearances after joining in a £300,000 move from Barnsley in January 2013.

The 29-year-old is known to be attracting interest from Rovers boss Gary Bowyer, although any approach is likely to depend on the future of much-wanted forward Rudy Gestede, but Wigan have emerged as a surprise option for Davies, who is more likely to command a regular first-team place with the League One club.

Prior to his arrival at Barnsley in 2011, Davies had spent the majority of his career in the lower leagues - with spells at Oxford United, Oldham Athletic and Chesterfield, among others.

Wigan have already boosted their squad ahead of the new campaign, with the arrivals of Richard O'Donnell, David Perkins, Donervon Daniels and one-time Bolton target Craig Morgan, although Latics are scouring the market for a forward capable of helping them win promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.
