Reports on Friday evening suggest Middlesbrough are closing in on the signing of Alex Baptiste, after agreeing a fee with Bolton for the defender.

Baptiste joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Blackpool in July 2013 and made 43 appearances in his debut campaign with the club, but spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers after falling out of favour under previous boss Dougie Freedman.

The 29-year-old returned to pre-season training on Monday and has spent the week at the Trotters' Euxton training base, but he is unlikely to travel to Austria next week after being granted permission to hold talks over a transfer to the Riverside Stadium.

Baptiste was high on Rovers boss Gary Bowyer's list of potential recruits this summer, but Boro appear to have stolen a march on their Championship rivals and look set to add the versatile defender to their ranks - making him Aitor Karanka's first signing of the window.
