Bolton have opened talks with Sheffield Wednesday forward Chris Maguire, who will become a free agent when his contract expires next week.

Maguire, who joined the Owls from Derby County in June 2012, scored eight goals in 46 appearances last season, including one against Wanderers in January, as the Steel City club finished 13th in the Championship.

The 26-year-old scored 19 times during a three-year spell that provided him with 92 outings for Wednesday, but has cast doubt over his future at the club after stalling on an offer of a new contract.

Maguire is most comfortable playing in an attacking role, but can also feature as a winger - a position Bolton boss Neil Lennon is actively seeking to improve upon ahead of the new season.

Should a deal reach a positive conclusion, Maguire could become the second player to move from Hillsborough this summer as Wanderers await confirmation of Gary Madine's impending switch.
