Preston North End boss Simon Grayson hopes to convince Jermaine Beckford into signing a permanent deal at the club, after he fired the Lilywhites to promotion.

Beckford, who had been on loan with North End since November, netted a hat-trick at Wembley Stadium, as they recorded a 4-0 victory over Swindon Town in the League One play-off final to ensure they will be playing Championship football next season.

Speaking after the game, Grayson believes promotion will give him a major boost in securing the services of Beckford on a permanent basis when his contract at Bolton comes to an end on June 30.

"It makes the job easier," Grayson told Sky Sports.

"I have spoken to Jermaine over the last few weeks, talking about him being unemployed in a couple of weeks.

"This win allows us to compete financially to keep him. The one thing about Jermaine is that he enjoys playing for myself and (assistant) Glynn Snodin.

"Money isn't his motivation - yes it helps - but when he is happy you get the best out of him. We have a special relationship."

Beckford, meanwhile, remained coy on his future. Leeds United and Wigan Athletic have also been credited with an interest in the 31-year-old, but the forward echoed the thoughts of the Preston manager by expressing his gratitude towards Grayson.

"He made me a happy person," Beckford said. "I owe him a lot.

"We seem to have a fantastic relationship and it just seems to work."

Beckford will depart Wanderers with a record of 11 goals from 51 appearances, while his stay at Preston sees him boast a return of 18 goals in 31 outings.
