Prospective Bolton signing Gary Madine hopes to prove his critics wrong, by showing he is good enough to be a regular feature in the Championship.

Madine will leave Sheffield Wednesday when his contract expires on June 30, with his next destination heavily speculated to be Macron Stadium, where he would become Neil Lennon's first signing of the summer.

After scoring 18 goals as the Owls won promotion to the Championship in 2011/12, the 24-year-old has suffered both on and off the pitch over the last three years - with a jail term disrupting his progress - but he hopes to silence his doubters next season by proving he can be a force in the second tier.

"I think the loan I've just had at Blackpool has done me the world of good because I had a manager in Lee Clark who really had a lot of faith in me," Madine told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"Even since he left, we still keep in touch. He gave me a load of starts in a row and since then my phone hasn't stopped ringing with people saying 'you've done really well at Blackpool and we'd be interested (in signing you)'.

"I think I've proven at Blackpool that I can do it in the Championship.

"That's what it's all about for me, proving people wrong. I've had a bumpy two years and I just want to knuckle down and work as hard as I can. With a bit of luck I'll get a good few starts in the Championship and I do go and shut some people up.

"I was the main striker at Sheffield Wednesday the year we got promoted and since then it's been a bit like 'I don't think he's ready for this league'. I want to show to the Sheffield Wednesday fans that I really am ready for this league.

"If that means me scoring against them, then so be it. I'll be respectful if I do and I'll keep my celebration under wraps."
