Bolton are closing in on the signature of Gary Madine, who will leave Sheffield Wednesday when his contract expires on June 30.

Madine, who has been with the Owls since January 2011, scored 18 goals as they were promoted to the Championship the following year, but has netted just 14 times in the three seasons since - a period which also includes spells out on loan at Carlisle United, Coventry City and Blackpool.

The 24-year-old, who also lists Rochdale and Chesterfield among his former clubs, is looking to resurrect a career which has fallen flat after he was sentenced to an 18-month jail term for ABH and GBH in October 2013.

Madine served five months behind bars and played 41 times this season, including 90 minutes for Blackpool during their 1-1 draw against Wanderers at Macron Stadium on April 4.

The Gateshead-born forward has been identified as a potential replacement for Craig Davies, who will be released next month due to fears over his long-term fitness, and Madine is reported to have turned down an offer to join Birmingham City in order to sign a deal to work under Neil Lennon.

Throughout the duration of his eight-year senior career, Madine has scored a total of 59 goals in 248 appearances - averaging a goal every 4.2 games.
