Robert Hall ended his loan spell at MK Dons in style, as they clinched promotion to the Championship with a 5-1 victory over Yeovil Town.

The Dons went into the game trailing 2nd-placed Preston North End by a point, knowing they would have to better the Lilywhites' result at Colchester United to avoid the play-offs and achieve automatic promotion to the second tier.

They immediately set about the job at hand, with Carl Baker firing past Artur Krysiak with just seven minutes played, and they doubled their lead midway through the half when Dean Lewington found the top corner with a stunning free-kick from just outside the box.

Darren Potter made it three when he latched on to a Lewington header to volley home on 35 minutes and the home side took a four-goal advantage into the break when Will Grigg headed past a helpless Krysiak six minutes before the interval to score the Dons' 100th League One goal of the season.

An own-goal from Jordan Spence briefly gave Yeovil hopes of a comeback, but their misery was complete 16 minutes from time when Lewington got his second of the afternoon with a bullet header from close range.

With Preston struggling to break down a stubborn Colchester United defence at the Colchester Community Stadium, MK Dons had risen up to 2nd and their promotion was confirmed when, eight minutes from time, George Moncur scored the goal that ensured safety for Colchester, promotion for the Dons and a drop into the play-offs for North End.

The full-time whistle prompted scenes of jubilation at Stadiummk, as they worked their way into the Championship for the first time since being rebranded from Wimbledon in 2004.
