Bolton have handed a trial to Aston Villa midfielder Daniel O'Brien, who is due to fall out of contract at the end of the season.

O'Brien accepted a two-year scholarship and further one-year professional contract at Villa Park in March 2012, but looks set to leave the club in the summer after failing to break into the first-team set up under former manager Paul Lambert and his successor, Tim Sherwood.

The 19-year-old played 60 minutes as Wanderers' development squad lost 1-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday and boss Neil Lennon will decide whether to offer a deal to the Leigh-born player over the coming weeks.

O'Brien was brought up in the nearby suburb of Astley and attended St Mary's Catholic High School. He represented Hindsford Vikings and Lourdes FC as a youngster, before winning the Lancashire Inter League Cup in 2007 whilst playing for the Bury League.

He has previous experience of turning out for Wanderers, having played for the club before going on to feature for Manchester United, Everton and, most recently, Villa.
