Reports over the weekend suggest Nottingham Forest manager Dougie Freedman is weighing up a summer move for Bolton defender Matt Mills.

Mills joined Wanderers from Leicester City in July 2012 for a fee of around £2million and, after recovering from a shaky start to life at the club, has captained the side for most of the campaign in the absence of Jay Spearing.

The 28-year-old was brought to Bolton by Owen Coyle, but became a regular part of the team during Freedman's two-year spell in charge of Wanderers prior to his dismissal in October 2014.

The former Reading man returned to the side for Saturday's defeat at Forest, after three games out with a knee injury, but was sent off just two minutes into the second half for a second bookable offence.

Speaking after the game, current Bolton boss Neil Lennon criticised his captain's performance - a player who is free to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.

"It's ill-discipline," Lennon said. "It's unacceptable and that's from my captain.

"He leaves us down to 10 men and he'll be suspended for another game.

"We've had him out for a couple of weeks and we want him back in the team because we've been leaking goals.

"I don't know what's going through some of the player's minds at the minute. Some of them look short of confidence but I can't change it.

"With the injury count now up to 11 players, it's a challenge for me. It's nothing to do with what we do on the training ground because you can't legislate for individual mistakes out there, that are glaringly individual mistakes.

"We have to change the mentality and I need to get through to some of them. At the minute, either I'm not getting through to them or they're not listening."
