Craig Davies has been praised by football supporters across the nation, after coming to the rescue of a stranded elderly couple.

Brian and Jennifer Armitage had been forced to abandon their hire car on the notoriously busy Chorley New Road, in Bolton, after running out of fuel.

While many fellow drivers failed to lend a helping hand, Davies pulled over, helped push the broken down vehicle to the side of the road and drove off in search of a local petrol station.

The Bolton forward, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, returned with a petrol can full of fuel and helped Mr and Mrs Armitage on their way - whilst also rejecting an offer of payment.

Mr Armitage, who is an 81-year-old season ticket holder at Macron Stadium, penned a letter to Bolton Wanderers to inform them of Davies' assistance, but admits he was caught buying a thank you gift by the player himself.

"We got Craig a box of chocolates for his troubles," Mr Armitage told the Manchester Evening News.

"We were taking them and the letters to the club when we happened to see him in Tescos. He recognised us both straight away and we recognised him. Craig was absolutely brilliant and a really pleasant chap.

"It just shows that not all footballers are money grabbers and that they do possess humanity."

When asked to comment on the story, Wanderers boss Neil Lennon added: "It is a great story and a fantastic gesture by Craig. It puts him and the club in a very good light. He is well trained!"
