Jay Spearing is due to train with Blackburn Rovers on Friday, as he prepares to spend the rest of the season on loan at Ewood Park.

Spearing, who was named club captain at Bolton last July, has made 23 appearances for Wanderers this season, but has failed to start a game since being substituted at half-time in their 2-1 defeat at Norwich City in October.

The 26-year-old, who converted a successful loan spell into a permanent transfer from Liverpool in August 2013, came close to joining Rovers weeks before his switch to the Trotters, but stalled on signing a contract after holding out hope of a return to Bolton.

Spearing has two years remaining on his contract with Wanderers, but a move across Lancashire could spell the end for him at Macron Stadium as manager Neil Lennon looks to shape his own squad for the final third of the campaign.

Blackburn play host to Fulham on Saturday, where Spearing, if eligible for selection, could potentially line up alongside Alex Baptiste, who completed the same loan switch last July.
