Bolton will have to wait until the end of the week, before officially confirming Adam Le Fondre's arrival on a 93-day emergency loan from Cardiff City.

Last Thursday, news broke that Wanderers boss Neil Lennon had beaten off competition from Huddersfield Town to complete the signing of the 27-year-old, but Football League rules are preventing the deal from being finalised.

With Kevin McNaughton already on loan from the Bluebirds, Bolton cannot sign off on the move until Joe Mason's registration is officially terminated on January 30 - with Championship clubs unable to have more than two players on loan from the same Football League club at any one time.

Le Fondre, who netted a 33-minute first-half hat-trick against Wanderers while playing for Reading last season, scored 41 goals in 110 appearances for the Royals, but has struggled to replicate that form in the Welsh capital after notching just three goals in 25 outings.

He was a notable absentee from Cardiff's 2-1 defeat at the hands of his former club on Saturday, as Reading moved into the fifth round of the FA Cup with victory at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The delay in Le Fondre's arrival at Macron Stadium means he will not be in contention for their trip to Rotherham United on Tuesday night, but he could make his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers next Saturday. He won't, however, be eligible for the Trotters' FA Cup fourth round replay against Liverpool, after turning out for Cardiff in the previous round of the competition.
