Redknapp: Wright-Phillips Rejected Bolton Switch

Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp has revealed Shaun Wright-Phillips turned down a loan move to Bolton last season.

Wright-Phillips has been a long-term target for a number of Wanderers managers, including Gary Megson, Owen Coyle and Dougie Freedman, with the latter making an enquiry for the former Manchester City midfielder last February.

The 33-year-old has played just 78 minutes of first-team football this campaign, in a 1-0 defeat at Burton Albion in the League Cup, and Redknapp admits Wright-Phillips is unwilling to leave Loftus Road because he would have to take a significant pay cut to move elsewhere.

Quoted by West London Sport, Redknapp said: "Let's all talk straight; if you're earning x amount and someone offers you less, you're not going to go, are you?

"Blackburn, Bolton and Charlton, they've come in and he said 'No, I'm not interested.'

"I like Shaun Wright-Phillips. He's a good lad and I haven't got a minute's problem with him.

"We all have opinions on players - some you want and some you don't. He's a good lad, trains well and has not been a problem to me. But he needs to play.

"Shaun's got a great contract here. We've had clubs want him and he's not wanted to go. I've said to him that I think he needs to move on and play football.

"But he's got a great contract here and it's difficult to go and get that money somewhere else. That's the top and bottom of it."

Wright-Phillips made his name at Manchester City, before completing a £21million move to Chelsea in July 2005. He returned to City after three years at Stamford Bridge, at a cut-price £9million, before signing for QPR on transfer deadline day in August 2011.

He has made 70 appearances for the R's, but has played just 14 times since the start of last season after falling out of favour under Redknapp's management.
