Lennon Reveals Reason Behind Riley Exit

Neil Lennon admits he allowed Joe Riley to sign for Bury because he couldn't guarantee the academy graduate a first-team career at Macron Stadium.

Riley completed a permanent transfer to the Shakers on Wednesday, bringing an end to Riley's 14-year association with Wanderers by signing a two-and-a-half year contract at the JD Stadium.

The 23-year-old recently returned from a successful loan spell at League Two side Oxford United and after seeing the full-back in training over the last fortnight, Lennon believes Riley's move was the best solution for everybody involved.

"I wanted to have a look at him for a week or two because he's been here, there and everywhere on loan," Lennon said.

"He came in for a week, played on Monday (for the development squad) and we just felt that, at 23, it was time for him (to move on).

"He probably wouldn't get as much game time here as he would elsewhere, so it was best for Joe to go and get some experience elsewhere."

Riley progressed through the youth system at Bolton, making his debut in a League Cup tie against Macclesfield Town in August 2011, before going on to make a total of nine senior appearances for the club.
