Former Bolton defender Tyrone Mears is back in football, after signing for MLS side Seattle Sounders.

Mears has been a free agent since leaving Wanderers at the end of last season, for whom he made just 32 appearances during a three-year spell that was blighted by injury and poor form.

The move to the United States, which is subject to international clearance and a work permit, provides the 31-year-old with an opportunity to resurrect a career that stalled after he broke his leg just days after completing his transfer from Burnley to the Trotters in 2011.

Speaking about the signing of Mears, Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said: "Tyrone is a player we had an opportunity to evaluate over the past summer when he trained with us in Seattle and we were very impressed with his pedigree.

"He's a fullback that is solid defensively, with the ability to possess the ball and to get forward in the attack.

"Tyrone is also a very good one-versus-one defender - a capability that is a key ingredient to success in our league - and we're excited about his future with our club."

Mears, who also spent time on trial at Everton earlier in the year, has more than 200 career league appearances under his belt, following spells at Manchester City, Preston North End, West Ham United, Derby County, Marseille, Burnley and, most recently, Bolton.
