Bolton have completed the signing of free agent Emile Heskey, who has penned a contract at Macron Stadium until the end of the season.

Heskey has spent the last three weeks on trial with Wanderers and played 63 minutes for the development squad on Monday night, in their 3-1 extra-time defeat to Reading in the U21 Premier League Cup.

The 36-year-old may face a wait before featuring for the first-team as international clearance is required from the Australian FA - who hold his registration following his release from previous club, Newcastle Jets, earlier this year.

Heskey's arrival adds to a strike force severely lacking in options, with Conor Wilkinson and Eidur Gudjohnsen the only senior talent available to manager Neil Lennon.

When asked whether the 62-time England international could still make an impact in the Championship, the Wanderers boss told The Bolton News: "He's obviously kept himself in shape since coming back from Australia and has trained quite well. He's a specimen and has always been a really good athlete.

"It's disrespectful to concentrate on his age. Age is a number and is an indefinable thing. You see some really young looking 36-year-olds on the pitch and some really old ones.

"It depends on the history of their career too and how they've looked after themselves. These two guys (Heskey and Gudjohnsen) have played for a long, long time at top clubs and players are still playing at that age in the Premier League and Champions League.

"John Terry is no spring chicken and he plays every game for Chelsea. They're not at their peak any more but they're still making a good contribution. Frank Lampard has made a huge contribution to Manchester City this season.

"These two have been at the top level for a long, long time so I don't see it as a gamble."
