Emile Heskey made his first outing in a Bolton shirt on Monday, as Wanderers' under-21 side were beaten by Reading.

Heskey has been training with the Trotters for the last three weeks, after being without a club since his departure from Australian side Newcastle Jets earlier in the year.

With first-team boss Neil Lennon and club chairman Phil Gartside watching on at Leyland, Heskey completed 63 minutes as Iain Brunskill's development squad were eliminated from the U21 Premier League Cup after a 3-1 extra-time defeat at the hands of the Royals.

Reading took the lead inside 12 minutes at the County Ground, as Dominic Samuel ran through on goal before calmly chipping the ball over an oncoming Adam Bogdan.

Bolton pulled level in the 34th minute, however, as Rob Holding cut in from the right flank before curling the ball beyond Daniel Lincoln with his left foot.

Medo Kamara, who has been out of the first-team picture since Lennon's arrival as manager, was substituted at half-time after appearing to pick up an ankle injury. Kaiyne Woolery took his place, but it was the next change, on 63 minutes, that brought an end to Heskey's evening, with Jamie Thomas coming on for the former England international.

Despite looking the most likely winners, Reading failed to find a way through in the final half-hour as the tie went into extra-time. They didn't have to wait much longer for a goal, though, as Aaron Tshibola slotted past Bogdan less than two minutes after play resumed.

The Royals sealed their passage into the next round three minutes into the second period of extra-time, with Bogdan left watching on as Jack Stacey's long-range strike took a wicked deflection before flying into the back of the Wanderers net.

Frustrations boiled over four minutes from time, as Tom Walker was shown a straight red card for a petulant kick at Reading's Craig Tanner, as the youngster's hopes of silverware came to an end for another year.
