Bolton have opened contract talks with Lee Chung-Yong, whose existing deal at Macron Stadium is set to expire at the end of the season.

Chung-Yong, who is closing in on 200 appearances for Wanderers, has recently rediscovered his best form, after previously struggling to hit the heights shown prior to a double leg break he suffered in July 2011.

The 26-year-old could miss the entire month of January, after being called into the South Korea squad for the upcoming Asian Cup, and Bolton boss Neil Lennon says he will try his best to ensure the former FC Seoul midfielder doesn't depart the club next summer.

"It breaks your heart (losing Chung-Yong in January)," Lennon said.

"We're in a difficult position with him as well because his contract is up in the summer, but to lose him for January is hard to take because it's out of our hands and is something we could do without.

"But he is a proven international player for his country and they have a big tournament, so I can understand.

"I've had this before, at Celtic, but when you're losing a player as good as him, in this kind of squad, it is going to damage us. There's no question of that.

"The January window will open so we are looking to try and bring players in. It's going to be very difficult, so I don't want the supporters thinking we're going to get a like-for-like player because players like Chung-Yong Lee cost a lot of money and that's something we can't do.

"We are actively negotiating, or speaking to him and his representatives. There are no guarantees, they hold the key to all this, so we will have to, not abide by what they say or do, but we'll have to listen to what they say first and foremost.

"We can't say either way at the minute - how long is a piece of string? It can go either way."
