Matt Mills will miss Bolton's game against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day, after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in Friday's win at Millwall.

Mills was booked by match referee Stuart Attwell with eight minutes left to play at The Den - the result of a challenge on Lions forward Martyn Woolford that happened on the edge of the Wanderers box.

Club captain Jay Spearing is currently out of the first-team picture at Macron Stadium, having failed to start a game since October, so Mills' absence looks set to open the door for a new skipper.

Tim Ream, Darren Pratley and Neil Danns are likely to be the leading contenders for the role, while Dorian Dervite and Lee Chung-Yong have previous experience of wearing the armband at domestic and international level, respectively.

Football Association rules state any player who receives five yellow cards on or before December 31 will serve a one-match suspension, while those accumulating 10 bookings up to and including the second Sunday in April will receive a two-game ban.

Players who pick up 15 cautions throughout a campaign are automatically hit with a three-match ban - the equivalent punishment of a straight red card.

The aforementioned Spearing, Chung-Yong and Danns are all just one yellow card away from suspensions of their own, with two fixtures of the year left to play before The FA's amnesty date.
