Max Clayton has been ruled out for the rest of the season, after undergoing surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Clayton was forced off the field just 28 minutes into Bolton's goalless draw with Ipswich Town last weekend, after twice receiving treatment from the club's medical staff.

The 20-year-old, who joined Wanderers from Crewe Alexandra in September, was sent for a scan on the problem last weekend, confirming he is set to miss at least six months of action - effectively ruling him out until the start of next season.

Clayton has made nine appearances since completing his move to Macron Stadium, scoring once, and had started the last five games, after appearing as a substitute in his first four outings.
