Bolton have confirmed the signing of Eidur Gudjohnsen, who has penned a contract at Macron Stadium until the end of the season.

Gudjohnsen has spent the last three weeks on trial with Wanderers and has done enough to persuade manager Neil Lennon into offering a short-term deal, taking him back to the club he represented between 1998 and 2000.

The 36-year-old left Bolton in a £4million transfer to Chelsea 14 years ago, after a spell which saw him score 27 goals in 77 appearances under Colin Todd and then Sam Allardyce.

Speaking to the club's official website about the capture of the Iceland international, Lennon said: "I'm delighted to have Eidur on board. I think he will be a big game player and he is relishing getting back out on the field.

"It may take him a little time to adjust to the Championship and the style of play that is required of him, but that said however, he has come in with a completely open mind - he's motivated, he's done everything that has been asked of him on the physical side of things and he can only get better.

"In terms of his footballing ability, we all know what he is capable of and that is an exciting prospect.

"He is a quality player, and he knows exactly what we expect of him going forward - he is definitely looking forward to the challenge ahead of him."

Gudjohnsen has been handed the number 22 shirt, which was previously occupied by Stuart Holden. His deal will be assessed towards the end of the season, before Lennon decides whether to offer fresh terms.

Pending international clearance, he could make his second debut for the club in Saturday's trip to Reading.
