Jermaine Beckford was on the scoresheet on Tuesday night, netting in Preston North End's penalty shoot-out victory over Oldham Athletic in the Football League Trophy.

On his first appearance for the Lilywhites, since joining the club on loan from Bolton last week, Beckford completed 90 minutes as Simon Grayson's side booked their place in the semi-finals of the northern bracket of the competition.

Scott Laird had fired Preston into a 32nd minute lead at Park, but the Latics turned the game around after the break courtesy of goals from Dominic Poleon and Danny Philliskirk - son of former Wanderers forward, Tony.

Tom Clarke equalised with 10 minutes to go, however, to ensure the tie would be settled from the spot.

After former Bolton captain Kevin Davies had missed his kick, Beckford successfully converted to bring the score level at 4-4. Plenty more goals were to follow, though, with all 11 players on each team taking a turn to win the game for their respective clubs.

In the end, Oldham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge was the unfortunate one. After missing his penalty, his Preston counterpart - Thorsten Stuckmann - drilled home to seal a 10-9 victory and send the League One promotion candidates into the last four.
