Eidur Gudjohnsen will be given every opportunity to earn a contract at Bolton, by stepping out for the club's development squad next week.

Gudjohnsen, who has been a free agent since leaving Club Brugge in June, has been training with Wanderers for the past fortnight, as manager Neil Lennon runs the rule over the 36-year-old - 14 years after he left the club in a £4million transfer to Chelsea.

A UEFA Champions League winner from his time at Barcelona, Gudjohnsen is expected to take part in a behind-closed-doors game this week, before stepping out at Macron Stadium for the development squad fixture against Middlesbrough next Monday.

Speaking about a potential deal for the Iceland international, Lennon admitted he wanted to see Gudjohnsen in competitive action, rather than being swayed by public opinion based on memories of times gone by.

"We're hoping to get him involved now in a couple of bounce games, or even a reserve game over the next week or 10 days," Lennon told The Bolton News.

"It isn't for me to judge how Eidur is feeling but he looks good, has trained well and he's in good condition. He's got the bit between his teeth and he's motivated to get back into the English game.

"When we got the call last week me and Phil (Gartside) thought it was a no brainer to give him that chance and we'll see how it progresses.

"You can see he is a class player in training but whether we do anything will be guided by his general level of fitness, I suppose.

"We've seen him train and he looks good but I'd be interested to see him on a bigger stage.

"From what I have seen so far I don't think I have any concerns on that aspect."

Gudjohnsen's previous spell with Bolton saw him net 27 goals in 77 appearances, before his departure to Stamford Bridge in 2000.
