Bolton defender Marc Tierney has suffered another setback in his rehabilitation, after undergoing further surgery on his troublesome ankle.

Tierney joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Norwich City in July 2013 and has made nine appearances for the club, but hasn't featured since September of last year after breaking his ankle in a 1-1 draw against Yeovil Town at the Reebok Stadium.

The 29-year-old was initially ruled out for five months, but, after failing to make it back before the end of last season, was forced into having an operation to remove scar tissue from the joint in June.

When quizzed on the progress of the former Oldham Athletic defender, Bolton boss Neil Lennon revealed the full-back went under the knife again and was unnoncommittal about any potential return date.

"Marc Tierney had an ankle operation," Lennon said. "I think that went ok, but he's still going to be long-term, obviously."

In Tierney's absence at left-back, Tim Ream has made the position his own over the course of the last 12 months - leading to him winning a number of Player of the Season awards for 2013/14.
