Mark Davies is facing a four-month spell on the sidelines, after injuring his knee in training earlier in the week.

Davies, who has made 11 appearances for Bolton this season, recently returned from a long absence with a cruciate ligament problem and may have aggravated the injury on Monday.

The 26-year-old was sent for a scan and, after reviewing the results, it has been decided to send him under the knife in an attempt to cure the injury once and for all.

Speaking to the club's official website, Wanderers boss Neil Lennon said: "He trained on Monday and looked great.

"He then came in on Tuesday with a bit of swelling on his knee so we sent him off for a scan.

"The scan came back, we then went and got a second opinion and it now looks like he needs a microfracture.

"It's a huge blow for us. He's been working really hard recently and offers us that something different."

Davies' knee problem is the latest in a long line of injuries for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder.

Since Bolton's re-introduction to the Championship, in August 2012, Davies has featured in just 53 of Bolton's 109 league fixtures - 48.6%.
