Tim Ream won his 11th international cap on Tuesday, playing the final three minutes in USA's 4-1 defeat to Republic of Ireland.

Entered into the squad as a late replacement for the injured John Brooks, Ream made a surprise appearance at the Aviva Stadium but could do little to help his country - who had already suffered the brunt of the damage by the moment of his introduction.

Cardiff City midfielder, and one-time Bolton target, Anthony Pilkington opened the scoring with just eight minutes on the clock, as he raced on to a pass from David McGoldrick before chipping the ball over an oncoming Bill Hamid in the States' goal.

The home side were denied a second when Hamid blocked a close-range strike from Daryl Murphy in the 27th minute, prompting a fightback which saw the visitors pull level with just six minutes of the half remaining.

A neat move involving Alfredo Morales, Jozy Altidore and Chris Wondolowski ended with Mikkel Diskerud volleying past Shay Given - as the sides went in level at the interval.

The Republic restored their lead 10 minutes after the break, however, as McGoldrick won possession and fed the ball to Robbie Brady, who made no mistake in slotting the ball through the legs of Hamid.

USA pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but were undone eight minutes from time as James McClean's 25-yard strike deflected off Geoff Cameron and past a stranded goalkeeper, who was beaten again four minutes later when Brady netted his second of the evening with a free-kick from just outside the box.
